The best heroes have an unconventional origin story. For my case, I made a joke post, “Masked Vigilante for Hire”, about addressing public safety in Frogtown with my own hands. The post became viral with people wanting it to come true. I made my debut as the Frogtown Crusader, on National Night Out within two days’ notice, thanks to the contribution of my friends in making a home-made costume. The most meaningful interactions were with young “person of color” children. They recognized that I’m like them (exposed legs). I received hugs and they started to leap like a frog. This experience was heartwarming!

I continued to wear the hero costume at community events to spread joy, community lore, and Frogtown community pride. The frog hat became a community symbol of my Frogtown roots and pride.
Bigger Questions: Can you imagine children developing their own superhero identity? How about adults role-modeling positive behaviors to the youth? There will be future blog posts delving deeper on the hero insight.
